ORCHARD SHED aka "the Cathedral"
Another amazing showcase for the talented Collin Schelzenbach and Michael Faller.
Kinda makes you want to leave the sides open, but that would defeat the purpose...

Water Management, cont'd..
Water is a blessing to us in Vermont, but on our mountainside in Ira we still have to be water-conservation-conscious. Here's the latest:
-
Renewing an old well to supply the sugarhouse and garage with water.
-
Fixing the very old 400-yard waterline coming down from the mountain spring.
-
Collecting rainwater via gutter system on the big barn roofs.

JOHN CAPEN and KATYA
Enjoying a drizzly ride with Nelson
September 2014

JOHN 1 and JOHN 2
These two guys really make things happen at New Day Farm. Katya, the farm manager, couldn't do without either of them. Plus they crack her up just about every day, which is a healthy thing! Does humor and bull--t count as an organic input to the farm?

PERMA-ORCHARD
Soph and Sid - our dynamic duo - worked hard this summer to enhance the soil and companion plantings in the orchard, besides bottling, admin, gardening, and anything they were tasked with. Hard to find two smarter and more hard-working employees!
Anyway, This is the recipe in one of our apple tree holes:
1 scoop cow pats
1 teaspoon mycorrhyzal fungi from Fungi Perfecti
1 bone
1 scoop crab shells from Neptune Harvest
Mix all together and...YUM!

WATER MANAGEMENT 101
We picked our orchard location in part because it was downhill from water. Now we are utilizing the little spring right above the orchard.
We put in a cistern and a standpipe spigot, and now we have WATER IN THE ORCHARD!!

MYSTERY EGGS
Glad we protected the orchard trees from bugs with these "wedding veils," but whose eggs are these?
Click here if you can tell us!
ORCHARD DAYS: SOPH & SID
Putting "wedding veils" on the baby trees to keep out Japanese beetles, while letting in the sun, and watering, watering, watering.
